The challenges

  • Every service has its own recommendations, antibiograms and processes, and what works at one site does not work at the next.
  • Starting in a new area, it is hard to know when to follow international, national or local guidance, or where each one is kept.
  • For an out-of-the-ordinary patient, you do not know which questions need asking, and working out a plan means reading documents tens of thousands of words long, costing time with every patient.

01 · STRUCTURED PATHWAYS

Guidance structured around the clinical decision

Pathways present the questions a senior clinician would ask in each scenario and conclude with a specific recommendation. The source guideline and version are shown on every pathway.

02 · INTEGRATED APPROVALS

Approval codes issued at the end of the pathway

Where local policy allows, entering the patient ID at the end of the pathway issues the approval code for each restricted antimicrobial recommended, with its approved duration. Routine presentations and approvals no longer need a phone call to a specialist, and the stewardship team is notified through their review list, keeping specialist advice for the patients who need it.

  • Approval code and duration issued for each restricted antimicrobial
  • Less time on the phone to specialists for routine presentations and approvals
  • The stewardship team reviews every approval from their list

03 · DOSING CALCULATORS

Dosing calculators with built-in safety checks

Calculators designed for non-specialist prescribers, with warnings for unsafe inputs and dosing weight calculated automatically.

  • Empiric vancomycin and gentamicin dosing
  • Renal dosing within the pathway
  • Warnings for patient groups outside the calculator's scope

What prescribers say

From the joint WACHS and UTS evaluation. Participants are anonymised by the study.

[Clinical Branches] is targeted against you making a right antibiotic choice, and it cuts down on a lot of the extra waffle around that.
Prescriber Evaluation participant P03
At nighttime when you are dealing with a deteriorating patient, being able to get onto [Clinical Branches] and figure out how to broaden cover to cover sepsis with unknown origin or something is extremely, extremely helpful.
